Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH) is one of South Africa’s foremost tertiary and academic teaching hospitals, delivering highly specialised care while supporting advanced clinical training through the University of the Witwatersrand. With the support of the Wits Health Consortium and donor partners, a new Intensive Care Unit (Area 579) was developed to expand the hospital’s critical care capacity.

Our team was appointed to construct and fully equip this new ICU, delivering a modern, compliant, and clinically efficient environment designed to meet the demands of high-acuity patient care.

Project Description

The project comprised the full construction and internal fit-out of a purpose-built Intensive Care Unit. This included structural works, clinical infrastructure installation, and integration of specialised medical equipment. The new ICU was designed to enhance infection prevention, optimise clinical workflows, and improve overall patient safety.

Outcome

Area 579 now provides a modern, purpose-designed ICU environment that prioritises patient safety, infection control, and staff efficiency. With integrated medical technology and improved spatial planning, the unit supports uninterrupted, high-quality critical care and is equipped to meet both current healthcare demands and future needs.
