Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (CHBAH) is one of the largest hospitals in the world and serves as a major tertiary referral centre for Gauteng. Through funding facilitated by RMB via the SPIRE initiative—an effort established by FirstRand to support public-sector healthcare—the hospital was able to convert a short-stay ward into a new Medical Acute Care Unit (MACU). The initiative increases bed capacity for patients who require close clinical observation and specialised support.

Our team was appointed to refurbish and upgrade the existing ward into a fully functional 24-bed MACU, delivering modern infrastructure, improved clinical systems, and a patient-centred environment tailored for acute care needs.

Project Description

The project focused on transforming a general ward into a Medical Acute Care Unit, including targeted building refurbishments, complete electrical and medical gas upgrades, and installation of new medical equipment. The modernised space supports enhanced infection control, improved workflow, and reliable functionality for acute patient management.
